lyrics

by Joe Jaunty
Original song recorded in 1990

Came riding in my old Ford
on a wet and lonely dark road
Rain pouring on my bonnet
like needles on a pinboard

The wipers on the windscreen
the sound made me feel so lost
and all alone-lone

The engine spinning soundless
and my wheels-they keep on rollin´
through a pitch-black-night so restful
Only the whining of the wind - Ho!

By the side of the gravels
young girl sitting on a milestone...

Picked her up in my front seat
shivering in her wet clothes
I asked what her name was
Told me; "to keep my eyes on the road"

She looked darn right miserable
couldn´t have been more than 17 years old...

Hey - my lovely
with those blue, blue eyes
what are you doin´on this wee-wee night?
What are you hiding
behind your lonely eyes?

I stared at the stranger
who were beside me
Couldn´t keep my eyes off
guess she must have thought I was some weirdo
But she seemed so helpless
like someone who had ran away from home...

We rode cross the county
She sat quiet in her soaked dress
I wondered; "Where U headin´?"
She said: "far-far away from home"
"No particular direction -
cause I´m abandoned on the highway...."

Hey - my lovely
with those blue, blue eyes
what are you doin´on this wee-wee night?
What are you hiding
behind your lonely eyes?

Searching for an answer
-only finding questions
She made my head puzzled
and my mind started to boggle

Why a girl - stranded on her own
on a wet and lonely dark road...

We stopped by a junction
for a train, just passin´
The whistle blowing in the night
like the girl - sounding so alone

And I wondered what it felt like
having no place to go...

Raindrops on the board
turned my head - saw an open door
No sign of "little-lost-girl"
only a wet spot on the floor...

The train-whistle broke the night
like a broken heart in a lost soul...

Hey - my lovely
with those blue, blue eyes
what are you doin´on this wee-wee night?
What are you hiding
behind those lonely eyes?
